Roads, old houses, warmth, sunlight..I am haunted by these images. I want to drive down that road to see what is there. Maybe its my age, feeling like I am at a crossroads, feeling that I want to move forward but I don't know where to go. What if we just walked our path and were surprised and delighted by what comes our way instead of trying to MAKE things happen....

This is done in acrylic on 8 x 10 canvas board

I am bummed I can't upload my latest from yesterday so I am putting this gal up that I did a few days ago. This was a hot day at the state fair. There is truly no where on earth like a Minnesota State Fair. Greasy, hot, sweaty , smelly -any food you want on a stick and crying and whining galore. The best part are the animal barns-the worst part was that they have changed the midway. My heart is broken. Instead of the one -toothed ,tattooed, foul mouthed Carny's of my youth-there were college kids in UNIFORMS. What was scary and fun and dangerous has now become disneyfied......god, it was awful.
This gal apparently had too much fair and was sitting in the midway-probably nursing her disappointment -and taking a rest under her huge umbrella. Note the madi gras beads...if it was New Orleans i would have accused her of lifting her top for them (of course, if it were the old midway I would have accused her of that anyway...)

Back to the road. I kept here that song "I'm on the road to nowhere" in my head while I was painting. The road to nowhere seems kind of exciting to me, maybe that would be a great place to rest for awhile. Nowhere doing nothing for a while. Well, that would last about ten minutes for me...........

This is acrylic on 8x10 on canvas board.

My daughters 12th birthday. Todays painting is an oil sketch. Old greek lady with an ice cream. It is looser than I usually do, and not so labored. I like it for that freedom, and I like her for the complete relaxation of the moment. I also loved that sunbaked feeling of the colors. I feel warm just looking at her...and I would like to join her for a treat.

Still Life! Challenged myself to do something different, although I have done florals in watercolor. These are in acrylic and I like the intensity of the colors. The more I painted the more I thought about the changes that life brings. The building in the back, worn by time and the elements. The pitcher that the flowers are in had probabbly been in the back of the cupboard for years. The newness of the flowers which will fade ...but there will be new ones to come, new ones to enjoy.
This is on 5 x 7 canvas board,

The cold is still affecting me. I crave warmth -therefore I went to the beach in my mind. Yum-sun kissed sand, the sound of waves, the worn boards of the house..the smells, the salt. Which leads my thoughts to salt water taffy and on to ice cream and cake (because my daughters birthday cake is in the fridge)-I had better go eat some breakfast before I get a fork and attack the cake!!!!!!!

Another landscape from the drive to Colorado. I love the hints of red you pick up-golden light bathing the fields, its so soothing. The sky is incredible-like an overturned blue bowl with the sun shining through. It makes me feel small and powerful all at the same time.

This landscape is done in acrylic on canvas board. It measures 6x6.

Bridge anyone?

Whatever happened to hats? and veils...wouldn't that be lovely..or boys pumping your gas......movie theatres with no one talking...gloves.....fancy dress balls...dresses cut on the bias..aprons.....cakes from scratch..ohhh-homemade macaroni and cheese.

I guess I am feeling cold and nostalgic. This lady is done in acrylics on 5x7 canvas board.

It is SO freezing and snowy and gray here. EEK!!! I am longing for warmth and color and that smell-that fresh farmers market smell, earthy and green. So if i can't get there the next best thing is to paint it!!!
This is an acrylic on a square canvas 6x6 and 3/4 inch deep.
I am going to turn the fire up now.

One of my favorite subjects-old ladies from my childhood. Since I am 1/2 Serbian and 1/2 Croatian-and yes at war with myself....I have always had a fondness for those old wrinkled peasant faces in babushkas. The wisdom, strength and courage these women had was incredible. It has always saddened me that I didn't appreciate them enough to ask more questions...Most of my memories of these ladies were from up on the range in northern Minnesota where my Grandma lived. My favorite moments were when they all screamed at each other in their native language.

This is done in oils on canvas board. It measures 6 x 8.

Hey- I have decided to try the painting a day thing. I am excited about trying new things, new subjects and just fooling around with the paint.

This painting is an acrylic on 6 x 6 clay board. We traveled through south Dakota this summer and I loved the sparseness of the landscape. One of my favorite things to paint are old, abandoned houses, there is something so poignant in that which we leave behind....
